Tybee Island is the home of vast numbers of sea turtles during nesting season. A female Loggerhead will travel thousands of miles to nest her eggs on the same beach where she herself was hatched. These turtles have been on earth for 112 billion years. Today nearly all species of sea turtles are classified as endangered. Slaughtered for their eggs, meat, skin and shells they suffer from poaching, habitat loss and capture in fishing gear.
